RWEZA COMMUNITY BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION
Connecting communities through safe infrastructure and improving access to education, healthcare, markets, and economic opportunities for more than 300 people every day.
Project Overview
For years, residents of Rweza, located in the Musaga Zone of Mugere Commune, faced serious mobility challenges because there was no safe bridge connecting their community to essential services.
During the rainy season, the area became isolated. Children struggled to reach school, families had difficulty accessing healthcare, local trade was disrupted, and unsafe river crossings created a constant risk of drowning.
After receiving an official request from the Zone Chief, the Association of the Coptic Orthodox Church in Burundi (AEOCB) mobilized funding and coordinated the construction of a new community bridge.

The Challenge
The absence of a safe crossing affected education, healthcare, mobility, safety, and the local economy—especially during periods of heavy rain.
Healthcare Access
Residents struggled to reach health centres safely and quickly.

Our Response
AEOCB financed the project and coordinated the purchase and transport of the construction materials required to rebuild the bridge.
The association supplied high-quality, thick timber planks and construction nails selected to improve the strength and durability of the structure.
AEOCB also covered transportation to the remote site despite the nationwide fuel shortage, which made logistics more difficult and expensive.
The local population, mobilized by the Zone Chief, provided the labour. Their active participation demonstrated strong community ownership and commitment.

Implementation Challenges
The nationwide fuel shortage complicated transportation and increased delivery costs.
Heavy rainfall also delayed the loading and delivery of materials. Despite these obstacles, the project was successfully completed.

AEOCB recommends that local authorities and community leaders regularly inspect and maintain the bridge to preserve its safety and durability.
